Internship & Volunteer Opportunities
The 1st Ward Service Office offers internship and volunteer opportunities throughout the year for interested candidates. Interns will gain hands-on experience in municipal government and will have an opportunity to work directly on local issues concerning in the 1st Ward community.
They may participate in several projects areas including direct community service, advocacy and community outreach, facilitation of social services, zoning and development, as well as public policy.Interns will be on the front lines of the governmental process and are encouraged to participate and create projects in their particular area of interest or study.
The 1st Ward encompasses approximately 60,000 residents and spans several dynamic neighborhoods including Wicker Park, Bucktown, East Village, Ukrainian Village, and Logan Square.

Eric Villalon is a student at Wright College where he majors in political science. Eric currently lives in Portage Park where he enjoys collecting vintage video games, reading and spending time with his dog, Abbie.
Elijah Weston is a recent graduate of Excel Academy of Southwest. Elijah hopes to go to Northern Illinois University in the fall for computer technology, pursuing his dream of becoming an app developer. Elijah currently lives in West Englewood and his favorite activity is coding.
Katie Stanczykiewicz is finishing her last semester at Illinois State University where she majors in political science and is a member of the women’s track and field team. Katie’s family is originally from Wicker Park, but currently resides in Mundelein. Katie is planning to move back to the ward after graduation.
